It's potential for making soft, warm and comfortable clothing surpasses the regular wool mainly because of one factor: fiber diameter.

Fiber diameter is measured in microns. Alpacas got fine fiber! Sheep got coarse fiber. The lower the micron-count is, the more comfortable it is. Alpacas have a micron-count mainly below 30, which is said to be the prickling factor.

As opposed to regular wool, alpaca fiber contains no lanolin. Many are allergic to lanolin so it is quite common to treat sheep wool with certain chemicals to get rid of all lanolin. In alpaca, there is no need for this. Another benefit, right there.
